Izzy Kohout

In this episode of our Ghost Light series, Izzy Kohout sings Not a Love Story by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk from Tales of the Bad Years.

Tales from the Bad Years is a new musical about a group of interconnected acquaintances and strangers who enter their twenties with great expectations. Over the course of the show, these twelve individuals collide and eventually even begin to connect and grow up. They experience love lost and first mistakes and a party to end all parties. There’s no doubt that the bad years make the best stories.
With 2020 being bad news for performers, entertainers, musicians, and anyone involved in the live entertainment industry the tone of this song and scope of this musical could not be more fitting.

“I stumbled across this song years ago when prepping for my HSC music performance and it’s been one of my favourites ever since” Izzy explains “I struggle to find good soprano performance pieces and this one is a bit of an unsung gem. I think the melody is beautiful, and it tells a hauntingly sad story”.

Like many others, Izzy tells us that COVID-19 has impacted her sense of community. “Not being able to do shows and see the people that are involved in them with you really impacts my sense of connectedness and friendship, which is one of the main things I love about theatre.” she says. Izzy will be taking to the stage again in March 2021, when she reprises the role of Cosette in Noteable Theatre Company’s Les Miserables.
“It has been so great to get back to rehearsals and start seeing everyone again,” Izzy says.

Izzy has been seen in Be More Chill with Manly Musical Society and Wicked with Willoughby Theatre Company and now Cosette in Les Mis.
“Cosette is definitely my favourite role I’ve played – I think the songs she gets to sing are gorgeous and I have fun bringing more dimension to her character, and making her a bit more dimensional, likable, and exciting than she is typically played.” said Izzy “Les Mis is also one of my favourite shows so it’s great to be such a central part of that story”.
